More than Just a Kitchen Sink

One component of a good kitchen is the plumbing and its fixture and there are many options available. In choosing your sink, know the different types first and weigh the pros and cons before finally deciding the one that will suit your needs best.

Stainless steel sinks
You can get the basic stainless steel sink for as low as $50. However, the higher-quality stainless steel sink has a thicker gauge of steel and a higher amount of nickel in the alloy and surface finish. Cheaper stainless steel can turn dull gray almost immediately, but a quality sink should stay bright for many years.

Cast iron sinks
Cast iron sinks with enamel finish are fast becoming popular. They can be chipped but are for the most part very durable. Most cast-iron sinks are self-rimming but some are with flush-fit rim. Many people prefer the self-rimming look, but the raised lip can make it difficult to wipe food particles from the counter into the sink. Prices are keyed to color, number of compartments and depth of the bowl(s). White sinks are the least expensive ones, followed by some lighter colors (beige, almond). The darker the color, however, the more you’ll pay.

Synthetic composite sinks
Thes sinks are made of solid-surface or quartz acrylic or quartz acrylic. Quartz-acrylic sinks are a new type offering both durability and heat tolerance of up to 375 degrees. Composite sinks are stylish and come in many shapes and sizes.

Beyond the sink style, it should offer convenience and function. A deep bowl and having more than one compartment can help in this regard. Separate half-bowl sinks can be stylish, but can’t accommodate large dishes. At least one l0-1/2 inch deep bowl can make a big difference.
