Wood furnitures are really nice to look at. They are sturdy and will serve you well for a long time if you maintain it well. Wood finishes, waxes and polishes have come a long way since its introduction and due to present laws, some of these are already obsolete to use and are considered dangerous to the wood as well as the environment. So, to maintain your precious wood furniture, here are some tips on how to take good care of them.

Be very careful in using cleaners that is not meant to be used on wood. Non-wood cleaners can strip the finish and do irreparable damage. Stick to products that are meant for wood for cleaning and overall care. Before using a product for the first time, be sure to test it on a small out-of-the-way part of the furniture. This way, if the product reacts badly, it will not be easily seen.

For daily dusting, you can use a general type product but again test it first. Don’t use wax or polish too much because it can lead to buildup and will eventually dull the wood’s overall finish. Once a month use a good liquid wood polish to bring out the shine.

There are different wood finishes. Some are meant to be more of a satin finish while some are a high gloss finish. Test out your polish or wax on a hidden area to make sure it does not leave a film or look funny after application.

Wood furniture sometimes have drawers on them. Drawers use different types of sliding mechanism. There are wood on wood glides, wood on metal ball bearings while some have plastic wheels on rails. If you have wood on wood, rub a candle on the wood rails so that it won’t stick and will glide smoothly.
