Remember that natural fibers absorb stains quickly but cleans up better than man-made fabrics. Synthetic fabrics are soil-resistant but don’t clean up as well as natural fibers do.
Choose fabrics that are plain or have flat weaves like cotton or jacquard because they will not fray and pill easily especially with excessive use, unlike highly textured fabric like tweed.
Fabrics that are dark colored and have patterns hide soil, debris and dirt well than light-colored and plain ones. The patterns and dark colors will hide whatever residue that you have failed to remove.
One way to prolong the life of your furniture upholstery is to place some slipcovers over them. Choose slipcovers that are washable, durable and coordinates with your over all room decor. Slipcovers are very handy because if there are accidents on the sofa like some spilled sauce, you can immediately take off the slipcover and throw it in the wash.
Lastly, remember to rotate your cushions every month or so and vacuum them regularly in order to prolong their life.
