The lava is made up of a mixture of paraffin wax, mineral oil, and carbon tetrachloride. When this mixture is heated, it will float in the alcohol solution which imitates lava. When lava lamps are turned off, the lava will sink back to the bottom and will harden.

You have to be cautious in buying a lava lamp though because poorly-made ones can become a hassle and a headache plus it will cost you extra bucks to repair it or replace it.
