Are You Crazy for Candles?
When it comes to candles, we have made great progress since the colonial days when women used to boil the bayberries to produce a clean-burning scented wax. Today, the candle industry has offered thousands of varieties of candles for all purposes. Although candles are no longer a household necessity like they once were, we still use them. Aside from using it as emergency light when there is a power outage, we use candles to make our rooms feel more comfortable, cozy and homey.

Aromatic candles helps us relax and we find ourselves breathing more slowly and deeply. Aromatic candles come in a wide variety of scents including the popular eucalyptus, jasmine, rose, orange, lavender and the less popular like lemongrass. You can buy aromatic/ scented candles or you can make your own using your favorite scents. You can find instructions on how to make scented candles in books or in the internet.
Decorative candles
These are candles that are shaped and molded into different shapes and sizes and added with decorations like dried flowers, beads, faux stones, shells, pictures and many more. Included in this category are gel candles and personalized candles.
Of course, candles should have holders for safety purposes and for displaying also. There are many candleholders to choose from. the key is to choose holders that are appropriate with the candle. you can also buy candleholders that will complement your room decor or theme.
Candles are fire hazards and caution should be exercised when using them. here are some candle safety tips for a hazard-free use:
- Keep burning candles out of drafts. You can use candle protectors to keep the draft away. The decorative containers not only protect the flame from burning irregularly and causing the wax to melt unevenly but they help to accentuate your design style.
- Trim the wicks to no more than 1/4 inch on new candles and between each burn period to maintain even wax melting.
- When burning pillar candles for the first time, measure the diameter and allow it to burn for an equal amount of hours. For example, a four-inch candle should burn for four hours initially to create a large well. Otherwise, a small section will melt, making it hard to light.
- Put a candle that can’t be lit again into a plastic bag in the freezer for 48 hours, and then place it in a closet. The chill/thaw process will release more of its fragrance.
- Never place jar or poured candles on cold surfaces such as marble countertops or glass tables. The heat from the container will cause the tops to shatter.
- Never leave burning candles unattended.
