Want to beat the bookcase blahs? Here’s how to create a decorative display that will fit your personal style.

  1. Use containers. Place loose items and paperbacks into woven baskets on the shelves. This will keep things orderly as well as provides texture.
  2. Coordinate the colors. Restrict your palette to a few hues like earth tones or a range of blues. If your book jackets do not match, remove them for a more unified look.
  3. Focus on balance. Stack larger books horizontally and place them on alternating sides of the shelves for symmetry. Try round shapes like plates to offset the hard lines of the books.
  4. Display your treasures. Got the collecting bug? Don’t confine your finds to a musty curio cabinet. Break up book monotony by adding a few you your favorite collection.
  5. Allow breathing room. Fill up the length of each shelf but provide ample space between objects so that the eye can have a rest.
  6. Inject life. Garnish with potted plants, a vase of flowers, bird’s nest, botanical prints or your favorite photo, anything that will add a breath of fresh air to the mix.
