Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

But quilts can be so much more. Including custom quilts as part of your home decor is one way to add warmth to your home. In addition to the obvious benefits of color and pattern, quilted fabric accessories add comfort to the rooms.

Most homes today have high ceilings in the living room which makes the home feel spacious but sometimes leave it feeling a little cold too. It can also be hard to find artwork that is big enough to balance the big walls and make the space feel welcoming and homey. An oversized quilt can be the answer. With its considerable size, it can fill a blank wall as well as giving a splash of color to the room. An added bonus with using quilts is that it is much cheaper compared to the prize of a painting of equal size.

Behind Closet Doors

Friday, April 25th, 2008

You opened the closet door one day, a pile of sweaters fell on your head and you snapped. In a fit of organizational pique, you purged your unworn dress shirts, untangled that knot of belts and paired up all your shoes. Unfortunately, that was the easy part – now how do you put the stuff back in so you don’t end up with the same mess?

Sort your clothing

The first sorting is to separate the clothes that are soiled or torn beyond repair. Throw away these clothes. The second sorting is to sort items one at a time into piles based on the following criteria:

  • Love it: You wear it faithfully and like how it looks on you.
  • Hate it: You wear it only once and you hate it and those clothes that does not fit any more.
  • Like it: You wear it fairly often. It’s also a key player in a few outfits.
  • Undecided: This is the pile for things you want to get rid of but are holding onto because they were gifts or were expensive purchases.

All towels have a fabric weight, measured with a GSM (grams per square meter) number. This refers to the density of the fabric used to make that particular towel. Lower GSM towels are lighter and thinner, making them a great choice for a gym bag or trips to the beach. You’ll likely want to save your heavier, thicker, higher GSM towels for use in the master or guest bathroom. (more…)

Garages should be organized into activity zones that make it very intuitive for everybody in the family. Picture how a hardware or a store is arranged. It is grouped with like items together. This common-sense approach to organization makes it easy for people to find things when they need them, and put them back in the right place when they are done.

Garden tools
Following a common-sense approach to garage organization, activity zones should be placed as close as possible to where the items will be used. In the case of garden tools, the ideal placement is near a side door leading to the yard. If the garage has no side door, then the next best location is a spot close to the opening.
